The border area between Son La province and Luang Prabang province (Lao PDR) has always held an important strategic position in protecting national sovereignty and security and promoting border development. With a spirit of solidarity and special friendship, the two provinces have strengthened close coordination in border management, protection, patrolling and control, and fighting against crimes, contributing to building a peaceful, stable and developed border.
Son La - Luang Prabang strengthen coordination in border protection
The border area between Son La province and Luang Prabang province (Lao PDR) has always held an important strategic position in protecting national sovereignty and security and promoting border development. With a spirit of solidarity and special friendship, the two provinces have strengthened close coordination in border management, protection, patrolling and control, and fighting against crimes, contributing to building a peaceful, stable and developed border.
With a border length of more than 32 km, the adjacent section is located in Muong Leo commune, Sop Cop district; the opposite side is Phon Thoong district, Luong Pha Bang province. The functional forces of the two provinces always maintain a mechanism of regular meetings, regularly exchange information, share experiences in border management, and promptly handle arising situations. In 2024 and the first quarter of 2025, the functional forces of the two provinces organized 2 bilateral patrols with the participation of 48 officers and soldiers.
Deputy Commander, Luang Prabang Provincial Military Command, Lao PDR: In recent times, the functional forces of both sides have regularly coordinated to handle border-related incidents within their jurisdiction; organized joint patrols and bilateral patrols to protect the status quo of the border and the system of national border markers periodically and unexpectedly.
In the border area managed by Muong Leo Border Guard Station, the dissemination of border laws and the prevention of transnational crimes has been stepped up. The Border Guard has just coordinated with the functional forces of Sop Cop district to detect and handle a case involving 1 subject illegally storing drugs, seizing 1.12 grams of opium resin; at the same time, coordinating and providing professional advice to the Phon Thoong District Police, Luang Prabang province to arrest 1 case involving 1 subject, seizing 2,158 synthetic drug pills and 22.2 million Lao kip.
Major Pham Tien Hiep, Chief of Muong Leo Border Guard Station, Son La Provincial Border Guard Command: The unit always proactively exchanges information and coordinates bilateral patrols with Border Guard Company 161, Hua Phan Provincial Military Command. Patrol activities are maintained regularly, ensuring the status quo of border markers and border lines. Forces from both sides also promptly advise and effectively handle incidents arising on the border.
It can be seen that the cooperation between Son La and Luang Prabang in border management and protection has been and is promoting practical effectiveness, contributing to maintaining national sovereignty and border security, and consolidating the special friendship and solidarity between Vietnam and Laos. With determination and shared responsibility, the two sides continue to build a peaceful, stable, cooperative border area for mutual development for the benefit of the people of the two provinces and the two countries.
