The border area between Son La province (Vietnam) and Luang Prabang province (Lao People's Democratic Republic) has always held a strategically important position in protecting national sovereignty and security and promoting border region development. The border area between Son La province (Vietnam) and Luang Prabang province (Lao People's Democratic Republic) has always held a strategically important position in protecting national sovereignty and security and promoting border region development. With a spirit of solidarity and special friendship, the two provinces have strengthened close coordination in border management and protection, patrol and control, and crime prevention and control, contributing to building a peaceful, stable, and prosperous border line.
With a border length of over 32 km, the adjacent section is located in Muong Leo commune, Sop Cop district; the opposite side is Phon Thong district, Luang Prabang province. The functional forces of the two provinces maintain a mechanism of regular meetings, frequently exchanging information and sharing experiences in border management, and promptly handling emerging situations. In 2024 and the first quarter of 2025, the functional forces of the two provinces organized two bilateral patrols with the participation of 48 officers and soldiers.
Deputy Commander, Provincial Military Command of Luang Prabang, Lao People's Democratic RepublicOver the past period, the functional forces of both sides have regularly coordinated in handling incidents related to the border within their jurisdiction; organizing joint and bilateral patrols to protect the integrity of the border line and the system of national border markers on a regular and ad hoc basis.
In the border area under the management of the Muong Leo Border Guard Post, the dissemination of border laws and the prevention of transnational crime have been intensified. Border guards recently coordinated with functional forces in Sop Cop district to detect and handle one case involving one individual illegally possessing narcotics, seizing 1.12 grams of opium resin; simultaneously, they coordinated and provided professional advice to the Phon Thong District Police, Luang Prabang province, to arrest one individual, seizing 2,158 synthetic drug pills and 22.2 million Lao Kip.

Patrol activities are maintained regularly, ensuring the integrity of border markers and the border line. Forces from both sides also promptly advise and effectively handle incidents arising along the border.
It is evident that the cooperation between Son La and Luang Prabang in border management and protection has been and continues to be effective, contributing to maintaining national sovereignty and border security, and strengthening the special friendship and solidarity between Vietnam and Laos. With shared determination and responsibility, both sides will continue to build a peaceful, stable, and cooperative border region for the benefit of the people of both provinces and both countries.
