Located at an average altitude of 1,300m above sea level, Pha Det peak, Chieng Hac commune is blessed by nature with a cool climate and abundant clean water, suitable for growing the specialty Shan Tuyet tea variety. Not only is it a precious product of the mountains and forests, the tea trees here are also opening up a direction for stable economic development when the tea product brand has been affirmed in many markets.
On Oc village currently has 355 ancient Shan Tuyet tea trees, many of which are hundreds of years old. Since 2019, the local people have been determined to preserve the remaining tea trees and proactively plant new ones. People grow tea in an organic way: no pesticides, no chemical fertilizers. The aroma of the tea is thus preserved, retaining the pure, mild astringent taste of the mountains and forests.
Realizing the economic value of the ancient On Oc tea tree, members of Tay Bac Cooperative, Yen Chau commune, together with local authorities, have encouraged people to preserve and care for the remaining tea trees; building the ancient Shan Tuyet tea brand with the desire to help people develop the economy.
Mr. Vang Lao Tong, On Oc village, Chieng Hac commune, Son La: In 2019, the cooperative mobilized people to take care of and prune tea trees. They provided technical guidance to me and the people, creating income for the people.
In June 2025, the On Oc Shan Tuyet tea product was assessed by the Provincial Council for Product Evaluation and Classification of the "One Commune One Product" (OCOP) program to meet the provincial 4-star OCOP standard. This is the result of a clean, safe production process and the preservation of traditional processing methods. Currently, the Cooperative is promoting trade, especially through e-commerce platforms to bring On Oc tea products closer to consumers in and outside the province.
Mr. Nguyen Anh Duc, Tay Bac Cooperative, Yen Chau, Son La: Being recognized as an OCOP product is a new step forward for the Cooperative, making it easier for products to reach the market. It is proof of the recognition of the Cooperative's quality products, so that consumers know more about the products.
From 2019 to now, the village has mobilized people to preserve and care for the remaining tea area and planted more than 1,000 new Shan Tuyet tea trees. The scent of On Oc tea is not only the pride of On Oc villagers, but also a testament to the transformation of the ancient tea area - from small-scale production to 4-star OCOP goods, the people here have affirmed the value of local agricultural products with their own hands and passion.
