On December 25, 2023, the Prime Minister approved the Son La Provincial Planning for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050 in Decision No. 1676/QD-TTg. Accordingly, the Son La Provincial Planning for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, has the following main contents: The planning scope includes the entire Son La province, with a natural area of ​​over 14,000 km², the 3rd largest out of 63 provinces and cities nationwide. The whole province has 12 administrative units, a population of over 1.3 million people, and 12 ethnic groups living there.

Adhering to the consistent viewpoint and goal: By 2030, Son La province will strive to become a province with rapid, comprehensive, sustainable and equitable development. Strive to make the province one of the fairly developed provinces in the Northern midland and mountainous region, the center of the Northwest sub-region; a key tourist destination of the Vietnam - Laos border region and the Northern midland and mountainous region; an agricultural product processing center of the Northern midland and mountainous region. Son La province planning has 4 typical economic spaces, including: Urban area and National Highway 6; Moc Chau Plateau area and vicinity; Da River reservoir and basin area; Border highland area.

The urban and rural systems, functional areas, and infrastructure focus on developing the urban system of Son La province towards the criteria of smart sustainable urban areas, green urban areas adapting to climate change, with a focus on developing in depth and breadth. During the planning period, 2 economic zones of Long Sap and Chieng Khuong border gates were formed and developed; 2 industrial zones, including: Mai Son Industrial Park; Van Ho Industrial Park and 15 industrial clusters.

Developing the transport network, focusing on coordinating the implementation of central transport projects invested in the area, such as: Hoa Binh - Son La - Dien Bien Expressway, Na San Airport, upgrading and expanding a number of key national highways and implementing key transport projects of the province.

Urban system planning, period 2021-2025, the whole province has 16 urban areas (1 type II urban area, 2 type IV urban areas, 13 type V urban areas); urbanization rate reaches 20.6,1%. Period 2026 - 2030: The whole province has 17 urban areas (1 type II urban area, 6 type IV urban areas, 10 type V urban areas), urbanization rate is about 25.8%.
