On January 20th, the Union of Science and Technology Associations of the province, in coordination with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Small Grants Program (GEF SGP) and the Provincial Forest Protection and Development Fund, organized a workshop to launch the project “Promoting sustainable agricultural, forestry, and green tourism livelihood development models from community forest environmental service revenue in Ngoc Chien commune, Son La province”.
Attending the workshop were: Mr. Nguyen Thanh Cong, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee; Dr. Hua Duc Nhi, representative of the National Steering Committee for GEF SGP Vietnam; leaders of the Provincial Union of Science and Technology Associations, the Provincial Forest Protection and Development Fund; representatives from several provincial departments and agencies, Ngoc Chien commune and 9 villages of the commune.

The project "Promoting sustainable agricultural, forestry, and green tourism livelihood development models from community forest environmental service fees in Ngoc Chien commune" will be implemented from January 2026 to September 2026. The total budget is nearly 1.9 billion VND, funded by the United Nations Development Programme and the Global Environment Fund's Small Projects Programme.

The project will be implemented in 9 villages: Nam Nghiep, Phay, Luot, Muong Chien, Muong Chien 2, Na Tau, Dong Xuong, Khua Vai, and Giang Phong. The project will support these villages in developing forest management regulations, raising awareness, and forming a community foundation for preserving indigenous intangible cultural values; providing advice and support for building sustainable livelihood models linked to green tourism, effectively utilizing environmental service funds, strengthening forest management institutions, and improving community living standards, creating a foundation for replicating the model throughout the province. Simultaneously, it will support local people in effectively implementing community-based ecotourism linked to sustainable green tourism; promoting, exchanging, and selling local agricultural products linked to OCOP tourism products…

At the workshop, delegates discussed and offered suggestions on solutions to find and secure markets for agricultural products during the implementation of livelihood models; coordinate with specialized units to train in community tourism development; and research and develop distinctive and outstanding tourism products.

Speaking at the workshop, Comrade Nguyen Thanh Cong affirmed that Ngoc Chien possesses great potential for developing ecotourism, resort tourism, and community-based tourism associated with forest protection. He expressed his hope that the units implementing the project would continue to expand the scope of research related to biodiversity conservation and the preservation of ethnic cultures; promote the development of sustainable agricultural and forestry livelihood models and green tourism from community-generated forest environmental service fees, helping Ngoc Chien commune to develop further in the future.
