Many years have passed since the Party Committee and the Border Guard Command launched and implemented the program "Helping children go to school - Adopted children of Border Guard stations", sponsoring poor students with difficult circumstances, orphans in border areas, Son La Border Guard has "helped go to school" for over 90 students with difficult circumstances, children of policy families, ethnic minorities, of which, 10 are Lao students. Many students have graduated from high school, passed the entrance exams to colleges and universities inside and outside the military with high scores.
The Border Guard Command of Son La province met and honored children in the program "Helping children go to school - Adopted children of Border Guard Station" who were admitted to universities and colleges in 2024.
Lia Xuan Ngoc was born into a poor family in Pa Kha 2 village, Chieng Tuong commune, Yen Chau district. Ngoc is the youngest of two children, the family's main income is mainly from farming. Understanding the hardships of her parents, during her school years, Lia Xuan Ngoc always reminded herself to try her best to study well so as not to disappoint her parents. And then Ngoc's efforts and struggles were rewarded, in the recent high school exam, she scored 28.89 points and was admitted to the Border Guard Academy.
Lia Xuan Ngoc shared: “Seeing my parents working hard in the fields every day but still only having enough to eat, I always tell myself that I must try to study well so that I can become a cadre in the future, not have to work in the fields. I am very happy that after so much effort, I was admitted to the Border Guard Academy. I have achieved the results I have today thanks to the help and support of the Son La Border Guard in the program “Helping children go to school - Adopted children of the Border Guard Station”. I promise to try to study and practice well so that after graduating, I can contribute to the Son La Border Guard to firmly protect the territorial sovereignty and border security of the Fatherland”.
Unlike Lia Xuan Ngoc, Thao Thi Dau (in Nam Lan village, more than 25km from the center of Muong Lan commune, Sop Cop district) has a very special situation. Dau's father is serving a sentence for following the temptation of bad guys to illegally buy and sell drugs, and her mother is often sick and still has to raise 4 children alone. Sharing the difficulties of Dau and her family, Muong Lan Border Guard Station has taken her to the station since 2016 along with 3 other children in the same situation. Here, she lives, eats, and studies with her friends right in the unit and is always accompanied and taught by the unit's officers in terms of speech, language, and study.
Thao Thi Dau emotionally shared: “For me, Muong Lan Border Guard Station is my second home. Since being adopted at the Border Guard Station, I feel that I have matured and have better learning conditions. I will try to study well so that I can return to become a teacher and bring letters to my village and hometown, contributing to building my hometown more and more beautiful.”
Lieutenant Colonel Lo Van Tuan, Deputy Political Commissar of Muong Lan Border Guard Station, said: “In the first days when the children came to "become adopted children" of the unit, they were very shy and unfamiliar with the living conditions at the Border Guard Station. But after a period of getting used to the new environment, receiving the care and sharing of officers and soldiers, now the children have truly become like soldiers of the unit. We have also assigned a female officer to directly take care of the children's meals, accommodation, and activities to conveniently take care of them.”
Lia Xuan Ngoc (first row, fourth row, from left) participates in the Military Semester Program "Nurturing Border Protection" organized by the Provincial Border Guard and Son La Provincial Youth Union.
Lia Xuan Ngoc and Thao Thi Dau are 2 of 5 students who took the high school graduation exam for the 2023-2024 school year under programs and projects that Son La Border Guard is implementing with high scores and passed the entrance exams to universities and colleges in the military and non-military.
In particular, implementing the program "Helping children go to school - Adopted children of Border Guard stations" launched by the Border Guard Command, currently, Son La Border Guard is maintaining support and helping 51 children, including 7 Lao students from the two provinces of Hua Phan and Luang Prabang; 9 children are "Adopted children of Border Guard stations" being raised at 5 Border Guard stations. Along with that, the Ministry of National Defense is implementing the project "Army officers and soldiers help children go to school" for the period 2021 - 2030 in the whole army, in which, the project stipulates the level of food support of 600,000 VND/child/month; support for necessities and means of transportation to school of 1,300,000 VND/child/year, in the border area of Son La province, there are currently 155 students of all ages benefiting from the project.
In particular, implementing the program "Helping children go to school - Adopted children of Border Guard Station", some leaders of agencies, units and localities are interested and supportive, each comrade sponsors 1 to 2 students. In addition, the Provincial Border Guard Command has called for and mobilized socialized funding resources from agencies, organizations, businesses and kind-hearted individuals to implement the program.
Colonel Vu Duc Tu, Deputy Political Commissar of Son La Border Guard, said: “Every year, the Party Committee and the Provincial Border Guard Command have directed grassroots units to review and make a list of students in the program “Helping children go to school - Adopted children of border guards” with good academic achievements to promptly give gifts, encourage and motivate them. At the same time, units regularly coordinate with families and schools to grasp the learning situation, thoughts and aspirations of the children, to support them in their studies in the best way”.
The above results are the clearest evidence of the effectiveness of the Program "Helping children go to school - Adopted children of Border Guard Station", the Project "Army officers and soldiers help children go to school" that Son La Border Guard has been implementing. The children will be the ones who spread knowledge, the doctors on the land where they were born and will also be comrades, teammates fighting side by side with Son La Border Guard to firmly protect the territorial sovereignty, national border security, and protect the peace for people in the border area.
