(sonla.gov.vn) On September 25, 2023, a delegation from the German International Cooperation Agency (GIZ) worked in Son La province to conduct a field survey to complete the proposal for approval of the global technical cooperation project "Sustainable Agriculture for Forest Ecosystems" (SAFE project). Welcoming and working with the delegation were Mr. Nguyen Thanh Cong, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee and representatives of a number of provincial departments and branches.

The SAFE project is co-funded by the European Union (EU) and the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). Project activities will run from September 2022 to May 2028 with the aim of contributing to an inclusive transition towards legal, sustainable and deforestation-free supply chains for goods exported to the European Union (EU) that comply with the Deforestation Reduction Regulation approved by the European Parliament (EUDR).
As the EUDR regulation has a major impact on a number of important sectors (wood and wood products, coffee, rubber), Vietnam has recently been selected as a member of the SAFE project, with activities expected to run from January 2024 to May 2028.

GIZ in Vietnam is authorized by donors to implement SAFE project activities in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. In order to promptly complete the development of the SAFE project proposal in Vietnam, GIZ Vietnam, in coordination with the Department of Crop Production, organized a field survey mission in Son La with the following contents: Assessing the current status of the coffee and wood industries in Son La and identifying technical support needs related to the new EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR); Learning about programs and projects (of the Government of Vietnam and development organizations) that are being or will be implemented in Son La to help the coffee and wood industries of Son La meet the EUDR; Identifying and analyzing stakeholders (including public and private partners and potential service providers) to cooperate and provide technical support to coffee farmers in the selected province within the scope of the SAFE project...

Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Nguyen Thanh Cong, Vice Chairman of Son La Provincial People's Committee, briefly informed about the potentials and advantages of the province, the development of agricultural production in the province, especially the development of coffee and fruit trees... At the same time, he thanked the resources of GIZ for supporting Son La province in agricultural development, responding to climate change... changing the awareness of agricultural development of people and cooperatives in the province, contributing to the growth of agricultural development. The province hopes that in the coming time, GIZ will continue to research projects in the area in many fields, including supporting the province to replant coffee trees, training to support people to improve their technical capacity for intensive coffee cultivation; Supporting the province to develop forest ecosystems to protect rare species of animals, plants, and genetic resources. The Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee also respectfully invited GIZ to attend and support the province to successfully organize the first Son La Coffee Festival in 2023 at the end of October 2023.
