Accordingly, Decision No. 1008 of the Ministry of Construction recognizes Moc Chau town, Son La province, as meeting the criteria for a type IV urban area (covering the entire existing Moc Chau district, with an area of ​​107,209.47 hectares and a population of 148,259 people, including the planned inner city area of ​​15,826.62 hectares and a population of 83,520 people, comprising the entire area and population of Moc Chau town, the entire population and part of the area of ​​Nong Truong Moc Chau town, and part of the area and population of Phieng Luong, Muong Sang, and Dong Sang communes).

Moc Chau has been recognized as meeting the criteria for a Type IV urban area, and the area designated for the establishment of a ward within Moc Chau urban area has been recognized as meeting the standards for urban infrastructure development. This serves as a basis and prerequisite for becoming a town, in accordance with Resolution No. 10-NQ/TU dated May 13, 2021, of the Standing Committee of the Son La Provincial Party Committee on building and developing Moc Chau district into a town by 2025. This is a step forward in improving the quality of life for the people; creating a solid foundation for the development of Moc Chau into a modern urban area, playing an important role in the socio-economic development strategy of Son La province and the Northwest region.
