(baovanhoa.vn) - In order to effectively implement Project 6 on "Preserving and promoting the fine traditional cultural values of ethnic minorities associated with tourism development," the Son La Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism recently organized a training course on researching, preserving, and promoting the intangible cultural values of ethnic groups at risk of disappearing in Bac Yen district.
The training course contributed to the effective implementation of Project 6 in Bac Yen district.
According to Mr. Thào A Mua, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Bắc Yên district, in recent years, along with economic development, Bắc Yên district has focused on protecting, preserving, and promoting the cultural identity of ethnic groups. Many folk games of the ethnic communities in Bắc Yên have been carefully preserved by various levels of government, relevant agencies, and the community.
Traditional folk games are essentially recreational activities stemming from history, labor, and cultural life, created by ethnic communities and passed down through generations. Many games have developed into sports, included in competitions at various levels, contributing significantly to the preservation and development of national culture and encouraging physical exercise and competition among the people.
Bac Yen is a mountainous district in Son La province, home to seven ethnic groups: Mong, Thai, Muong, Dao, Kho Mu, Kinh, and Tay. Each ethnic group possesses diverse and rich traditional customs and practices.
Especially during festivals and traditional celebrations, folk sports competitions have become an indispensable part of life in the villages. Besides providing exciting competitions, these folk games also bring joyful laughter to the spectators and the local people who come to watch and cheer.
Similar to other folk games of ethnic groups in Bac Yen district, the Mong people have many folk games such as Pao throwing, stick pushing, Dragon hatching eggs, Tu Lu, crossbow shooting... which always attract a large number of participants and are preserved as a unique cultural feature of the Mong people here.
Among these, the Tu Lu game and the Hmong crossbow shooting game have become popular among many people. These are also traditional sports that help Hmong men demonstrate their strength, dexterity, quick reflexes, and good judgment. From adults to children, everyone can participate, creating a joyful and united atmosphere among members of the village community, contributing to the spread of the beautiful traditions of the Hmong people.
Currently, Tu Lu, the crossbow shooting game of the Mong ethnic group, has become a popular game, attracting many people from other ethnic groups to watch and learn about it. At cultural events in Bac Yen district, Tu Lu, the crossbow shooting game, as well as other folk games, are introduced to tourists from near and far.

Mr. Nguyen The Cong, Deputy Director of the Son La Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, said that in order to effectively implement Project 6 on "Preserving and promoting the valuable traditional culture of ethnic minorities associated with tourism development" under the National Target Program for socio-economic development of ethnic minority and mountainous areas in Son La province in 2024, the Son La Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism recently coordinated with the Bac Yen District People's Committee to organize a training course on researching, preserving, and promoting the intangible cultural values of ethnic groups at risk of disappearing in Bac Yen. The training course was attended by 50 participants who are enthusiasts of sports and folk games of the Mong ethnic group in Bac Yen.
During the training, participants were introduced to the role and significance of preserving and promoting the valuable intangible cultural values of ethnic groups, including the Tu Lu game and the crossbow shooting of the Hmong people. Participants exchanged skills and techniques in playing Tu Lu and shooting the Hmong crossbow, learned how to make crossbows and arrows, and how to make Tu Lu balls, and practiced competing in these two sports. They were also informed about preserving and promoting the traditional cultural values of ethnic minorities in conjunction with tourism development, through useful and practical topics relevant to their local areas.
In the coming period, to effectively preserve and promote the folk games of ethnic groups, the Son La Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Bac Yen district, and all levels and sectors will continue to invest in facilities and equipment for community cultural centers and training grounds. Emphasis will be placed on promoting the core role of village heads, influential community leaders, and key figures in sports and physical education, effectively utilizing cultural institutions at the grassroots level.
At the same time, actively restoring and preserving traditional rituals and folk games during holidays, anniversaries, and traditional days of the country, province, and locality aims to create a joyful and enthusiastic atmosphere for the people, while also creating highlights and contributing to the sustainable development of community tourism.
