Moc Chau town was established on the basis of the entire natural area and population size of Moc Chau district today.
The Standing Committee of the 15th National Assembly has just issued a Resolution on the arrangement of district and commune-level administrative units of Son La province for the 2023-2025 period.
Accordingly, Moc Chau town was established on the basis of the entire natural area of 1,072.09 km2 and the current population of 148,259 people of Moc Chau district.

Regarding the administrative units, Moc Chau town has 15 commune-level administrative units, including 8 wards and 7 communes. Of which, Moc Ly ward was established on the basis of a part of the natural area and population of Moc Chau town; Moc Son ward was established on the basis of the entire natural area and population of Moc Chau town after adjustment; Binh Minh ward was established on the basis of a part of the natural area and population of Moc Chau Farm town; Van Son ward was established on the basis of merging a part of the natural area and the entire population of Moc Chau Farm town after adjustment and a part of the natural area and the entire population of Phieng Luong commune...
Most of the communes are also newly established on the basis of consolidation, merger, and integration... of the natural area and population size of existing communes, as well as after adjustment.
Along with the arrangement and establishment of administrative units, the Resolution also stipulates the establishment of Moc Chau Town People's Court on the basis of inheriting Moc Chau District People's Court; the establishment of Moc Chau Town People's Procuracy on the basis of inheriting Moc Chau District People's Procuracy.
The unique culture of Moc Chau ethnic groups is the highlight that "holds" tourists' feet.
This Resolution comes into force from February 1, 2025.
From the effective date of this resolution, Son La province has 12 district-level administrative units (currently); 200 commune-level administrative units, a reduction of 4 commune-level administrative units compared to present.
