Moc Chau town was established based on the entire natural area and population size of the current Moc Chau district.
The Standing Committee of the 15th National Assembly has just issued a Resolution on the rearrangement of district and commune-level administrative units in Son La province for the period 2023-2025.
Accordingly, Moc Chau town was established based on the entire natural area of 1,072.09 km2 and a population of 148,259 people of the current Moc Chau district.

Regarding its subordinate administrative units, Moc Chau town has 15 commune-level administrative units, including 8 wards and 7 communes. Specifically, Moc Ly ward was established based on a portion of the natural area and population of Moc Chau town; Moc Son ward was established based on the entire natural area and population of Moc Chau town after adjustments; Binh Minh ward was established based on a portion of the natural area and population of Moc Chau Agricultural Farm town; Van Son ward was established by merging a portion of the natural area and the entire population of Moc Chau Agricultural Farm town after adjustments with a portion of the natural area and the entire population of Phieng Luong commune…
Most communes were also newly established based on the consolidation, merging, and incorporation of the natural area and population size of existing communes, as well as after adjustments.
Along with the reorganization and establishment of administrative units, the Resolution also stipulates the establishment of the People's Court of Moc Chau town on the basis of inheriting the People's Court of Moc Chau district; and the establishment of the People's Procuracy of Moc Chau town on the basis of inheriting the People's Procuracy of Moc Chau district.
The unique culture of the ethnic groups in Moc Chau is a highlight that attracts tourists.
This resolution shall take effect from February 1, 2025.
From the date this resolution takes effect, Son La province will have 12 district-level administrative units (the same as currently); and 200 commune-level administrative units, a reduction of 4 commune-level administrative units compared to the present.
