Son La Provincial Music and Dance Theater was established on July 12, 1952, formerly known as "Son La Provincial Propaganda and Performing Arts Team", is an address to bring songs and singing to the public, and at the same time is a place to preserve and conserve traditional cultural values of ethnic groups.

After more than 70 years of construction and development, Son La Provincial Music and Dance Theater has launched thousands of performances, serving millions of viewers.
These achievements are the result of the determination, solidarity and unanimity of the Theater's leadership team, including the contribution of Director, Meritorious Artist Doan The Hung, with the method of managing, building and organizing performances of programs to carry out political tasks as well as meet the artistic enjoyment needs of local audiences.
Meritorious Artist The Hung was born and raised in Moc Chau Farm town, Moc Chau district. His love for music was awakened in him from a young age, after each time he saw the workers in the collective housing area playing guitars and singing on the steppe on moonlit nights.
After 2 years of training at the Son La School of Culture and Arts and the Military School of Culture and Arts, in 1988, he returned to work at the Son La Provincial Music and Dance Troupe (now the Provincial Music and Dance Theater). In 1999, artist Doan The Hung won the first prize of Sao Mai in the province and entered the final round of Sao Mai nationwide. His name has since become known to many people. In 2004, he passed the entrance exam and studied at the Vietnam National Academy of Music.

In 2009, he was appointed Deputy Director of the Son La Provincial Music and Dance Theater, in charge of professional matters. In 2023, he officially became the Theater Director, together with the Board of Directors, artists and actors of the Theater, created strong changes, affirming the artistic quality of the Son La Theater.
In order to collect, compose works, improve and build art programs, every year the Board of Directors, the Art Council and the team of directors, musicians and choreographers of the unit have worked hard to visit the villages of ethnic minorities to research and collect traditional and unique folk songs, music and dances of each ethnic group.
Thereby, preserving and preserving the value of ancient folk melodies, folk music, ancient dances, and festivals typical of each ethnic group. At the same time, the Theater invites typical artisans of each ethnic group to organize and teach the team of artists and actors the techniques and skills of performing traditional folk songs, folk dances, and folk music of each ethnic group to apply in composing, building, and performing.
Every year, the Theater always spends an average of 60 - 70 days/year, regardless of difficulties and hardships, to organize tours to serve audiences in districts, communes and villages throughout the province, paying special attention to remote areas, resettlement areas, and border highlands; contributing significantly to improving the spiritual life and raising the intellectual level of ethnic minorities.
The Theater is always active and completes its assigned tasks well. In addition, the Theater has also promoted its achievements in organizing performances to serve major international events held in Vietnam or international delegations and guests visiting and working in the province.
Especially in recent years, with the Da Giang Sediment Art Program participating in the 2021 National Music and Dance Festival (Phase 1) in Hai Phong City, the Theater won a Silver Medal for the entire program; 2 Gold Medals, 3 Silver Medals, 1 Bronze Medal for the performances; an Excellence Award for the Dance Team and 1 Excellence Musician Award.
The art program with the theme "Thanh am ban xa" participated in the 2023 National Solo - Ensemble Competition of Traditional Musical Instruments in Hoa Binh city and won 1 Second Prize for Solo and 1 Second Prize for Ensemble...
With the efforts and dedication of the staff and artists, Son La Provincial Music and Dance Theater has been recognized by the State, Son La Province, and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism with many noble Orders, Medals, and titles, most recently the First Class Labor Medal in 2022 awarded by the President.
The successes of the Theater cannot be mentioned without mentioning the role of Meritorious Artist The Hung. In 2023, Mr. Hung was honored by the Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism as one of 78 typical advanced models of the cultural sector. This is a recognition of his efforts in the journey of developing and building a strong Theater, becoming one of the quality art units in the country.
