On January 6th, Yen Chau district held a ceremony to announce the Resolution of the Standing Committee of the National Assembly on the rearrangement of commune-level administrative units in Yen Chau district and the Decision of the People's Committee of Son La province on recognizing Yen Chau urban area (expanded Yen Chau town) as meeting the criteria of a type V urban area.

Attending the announcement ceremony were: Comrade Hoang Quoc Khanh, Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee; Vi Duc Tho, Member of the Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee, Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of the province; Luong Thi Van Anh, Member of the Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee, Head of the Provincial Inspection Committee; Nguyen Duc Thanh, Member of the Standing Committee of the Provincial Party Committee, Head of the Provincial Organization Department; representatives of provincial departments and agencies; and Standing Committees of district Party Committees.

At the announcement ceremony, the People's Committee of Yen Chau district announced Decision No. 1280/NQ-UBTVQH15 dated November 14, 2024, of the Standing Committee of the National Assembly on the rearrangement of commune-level administrative units in Yen Chau district.
Accordingly, a portion of the natural area of 8.14 km² will be adjusted.2, with a population of 2,633 people in Vieng Lan commune and a natural area of 6.44 km².2The population of 2,268 people from Sặp Vạt commune was merged into Yên Châu town. After the adjustment, Yên Châu town has a natural area of 15.75 km².2and the population size is 9,112 people.
Adjusting a portion of the natural area by 3.82 km².2The commune of Viêng Lán was merged into Sặp Vạt commune. After the adjustment, Sặp Vạt commune has a natural area of 51.71 km².2and a population of 2,405 people.
The entire remaining natural area of Vieng Lan commune was merged into Chieng Pan commune. After the merger, Chieng Pan commune has a natural area of 53.57 km².2 and the population size is 4,476 people.
Following the reorganization, Yen Chau district has 14 commune-level administrative units, including 13 communes and 1 town (a reduction of 1 commune). The resolution takes effect from February 1, 2025.

At the announcement ceremony, the People's Committee of Yen Chau district also announced Decision No. 1263/QD-UBND dated June 30, 2024, of the People's Committee of Son La province recognizing Yen Chau urban area (expanded Yen Chau town) as meeting the criteria of a type V urban area.

Speaking at the announcement ceremony, Comrade Hoang Quoc Khanh emphasized: The reorganization of administrative units to reduce the number of administrative layers and concentrate resources for socio-economic development is absolutely necessary. Expanding Yen Chau town and recognizing Yen Chau as a type V urban area is an important prerequisite for socio-economic development and improving the material and spiritual lives of the people.
The Provincial Party Secretary requested that the Party Committee and government of Yen Chau district urgently reorganize the organizational structure of Yen Chau town and the communes in the area to ensure efficiency and effectiveness; accelerate administrative reform and implement digital transformation in leadership, direction, and management; and improve land and urban management. Attention should be paid to the plan and roadmap for arranging, assigning, and resolving the entitlements and policies for redundant officials, civil servants, and non-specialized personnel; and a plan for the rational arrangement and allocation of office space and public assets should be developed to ensure the necessary conditions for the operation of Yen Chau town and the communes in the area. The district should leverage its internal strengths, potential, advantages in natural conditions, history, and traditional cultural values, proactively overcome challenges, seize opportunities, and develop Yen Chau into a developed district within the province.

On this occasion, the Provincial People's Committee awarded certificates of merit to one collective and three individuals; the Yen Chau District People's Committee awarded certificates of merit to 14 collectives and 33 individuals for their outstanding achievements in developing the plan for rearranging commune-level administrative units in the 2023-2025 period.
