On January 6, Yen Chau district held a ceremony to announce the Resolution of the National Assembly Standing Committee on the arrangement of commune-level administrative units in Yen Chau district and the Decision of the People's Committee of Son La province on recognizing Yen Chau urban area (expanded Yen Chau town) as meeting the criteria of a type V urban area.

At the announcement ceremony, Yen Chau District People's Committee announced Decision No. 1280/NQ-UBTVQH15 dated November 14, 2024 of the National Assembly Standing Committee on the arrangement of commune-level administrative units in Yen Chau district.
Accordingly, adjusting a part of the natural area of 8.14 km2, population size of 2,633 people of Vieng Lan commune and a natural area of 6.44 km2, population size of 2,268 people of Sap Vat commune, to merge into Yen Chau town. After adjustment, Yen Chau town has a natural area of 15.75 km2and the population is 9,112 people.
Adjustment of a part of natural area of 3.82 km2of Vieng Lan commune to merge into Sap Vat commune. After adjustment, Sap Vat commune has a natural area of 51.71 km2and population size 2,405 people.
The entire remaining natural area of Vieng Lan commune was merged into Chieng Pan commune. After the merger, Chieng Pan commune had a natural area of 53.57 km2.2 and the population is 4,476 people.
After the reorganization, Yen Chau district has 14 commune-level administrative units, including 13 communes and 1 town (reduced by 1 commune). The resolution takes effect from February 1, 2025.

At the announcement ceremony, Yen Chau District People's Committee also announced Decision No. 1263/QD-UBND dated June 30, 2024 of Son La Provincial People's Committee on recognizing Yen Chau urban area (expanded Yen Chau town) meeting the criteria of a type V urban area.

Speaking at the announcement ceremony, comrade Hoang Quoc Khanh emphasized: The arrangement of administrative units to reduce the number of focal points and concentrate investment resources for socio-economic development is extremely necessary. Expanding Yen Chau town and recognizing Yen Chau urban area as meeting the criteria of a type V urban area is an important premise for socio-economic development and improving the material and spiritual life of the people.
The Provincial Party Secretary requested the Party Committee and the government of Yen Chau district to urgently improve the organizational structure of Yen Chau town and communes in the area to ensure streamlined, effective and efficient operations; promote administrative procedure reform, implement digital transformation in leadership, direction and operation; better implement land management and urban management. Pay attention to plans and roadmaps for arranging, assigning and resolving regimes and policies for redundant cadres, civil servants and non-professional workers; have plans to arrange and allocate working offices and public assets reasonably, ensuring necessary conditions for the operations of Yen Chau town and communes in the area. Promote internal strength, potential, advantages in natural conditions, history and traditional cultural values of the locality, proactively overcome challenges, seize opportunities, to make Yen Chau a developed district in the province.
