On January 14th, Quynh Nhai district (Son La province) held a ceremony to announce that Muong Giang commune had achieved advanced new rural standards and to announce the Resolution of the Standing Committee of the National Assembly on the establishment of Muong Giang town in Quynh Nhai district.

Muong Giang, located in the central area of Quynh Nhai district, is a model commune in Son La province for new rural development and was recognized in 2015. To achieve the goal of building an advanced new rural commune, the commune has focused on mobilizing resources to develop effective economic models and improve essential infrastructure serving the lives and production of its people.

Over the years, Muong Giang commune has focused on transforming its crop and livestock structure, developing effective economic models such as: commercial livestock farming, industrial crop cultivation, cage fish farming, and agricultural and aquatic product processing. Alongside this, the commune has consistently prioritized the preservation and promotion of the cultural values of ethnic groups; 6 out of 7 schools at all levels in the commune have achieved National Standard Level 1 or higher; average per capita income in rural areas has reached over 55 million VND/person/year; and the poverty rate has decreased to only 4.8%. In the past nearly four years, Muong Giang commune has mobilized a total capital of nearly 165.7 billion VND. To date, the commune has completed the targets for advanced new rural commune status for the 2021-2025 period.

Implementing the project to transform Muong Giang commune into a town, over the past years, Quynh Nhai district has mobilized resources and prioritized the construction of several infrastructure projects, such as: urban renovation and beautification, upgrading transportation infrastructure and drainage systems to improve the landscape and meet urban development needs. By the end of the second quarter of 2024, the commune had met all 55 criteria out of 5 for a type V urban area and was recognized by the People's Committee of Son La province.

At the ceremony, representatives of the Quỳnh Nhai district leadership announced Resolution No. 1280/NQ-UBTVQH15 dated November 14, 2024, of the Standing Committee of the National Assembly on the establishment of Mường Giàng town.

Accordingly, Muong Giang town was established based on the entire natural area of 67.97 km2 and a population of 11,832 people; bordering Chieng Bang, Chieng On, and Pa Ma Pha Khinh communes in Thuan Chau district (Son La province) and Dien Bien province. After the establishment of the town, Quynh Nhai district has 11 administrative units at the commune level, including 10 communes and 1 town.
The leaders of Quynh Nhai district also announced the decision of the Son La Provincial People's Committee recognizing Quynh Nhai as a Type V urban area (the area where Muong Giang town is planned to be established); and launched the emulation movement "172 days of all people working together to build Quynh Nhai district to achieve new rural standards by 2025".

At the announcement ceremony, the Standing Deputy Secretary of the Son La Provincial Party Committee, Lo Minh Hung, requested that Muong Giang town urgently consolidate its organizational structure; continue to leverage its internal resources, potential, and strengths in socio-economic development, attract investment resources to develop industrial production, handicrafts, tourism and services, train human resources, and build Muong Giang town into an increasingly developed area. In addition, he urged the town to complete the criteria of a civilized urban area, making a significant contribution to Quynh Nhai district achieving the new rural standard and sustainable development. He also requested that Quynh Nhai district continue to effectively implement social welfare programs, eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses; and streamline the political system's organizational structure for efficient and effective operation.

On this occasion, the Chairman of the People's Committee of Son La province awarded Certificates of Merit to 2 collectives and 6 individuals; the Chairman of the People's Committee of Quynh Nhai district awarded Certificates of Merit to 9 collectives and 12 individuals for their outstanding achievements in implementing the advanced new rural development program and advising on the development of the plan for rearranging commune-level administrative units in the 2023-2025 period.
