Leveraging its potential in land and climate, Mai Son commune has focused on developing fruit trees in recent years, gradually forming concentrated production areas and commodity production along the value chain. In particular, it has emphasized replicating successful fruit tree cultivation models, applying advanced techniques, and establishing production linkages, contributing to increased income for the people.
Longan is one of the main crops in Mai Son commune, thanks to its good adaptability to the local climate and soil conditions. As a result, the area and production of longan have remained stable in recent years, becoming the main source of income for many households.
As one of the pioneering households in Nhap village to grow longan trees 9 years ago, Mr. Lo Van Hom's longan orchard now brings in revenue of 80-100 million VND per year.
Mr. Lo Van Hom, Nhap village, Mai Son commune, Son La province: My family has been growing longan trees for 9 years now. This longan orchard has provided our family with a decent income compared to corn and sugarcane. I believe that to achieve good results, we must take care of the trees, apply scientific and technical methods, fertilize at the right time, and spray regularly to control pests and diseases. Only then will the longan trees yield a good harvest.
Along with longan, Mai Son commune has also expanded the cultivation of other fruit trees such as custard apple, passion fruit, and strawberries, creating a diverse range of products to meet market demand.
Mr. Hoang Van Quy, Nhap village, Mai Son commune, Son La province: Recognizing the effectiveness of custard apple cultivation compared to other crops, my family switched to growing them in 2020. I find caring for custard apples a bit meticulous, but the economic benefits are stable. This year, my family expects to harvest over ten tons of custard apples. Currently, we are bagging and caring for the fruit to maximize yield.
In order to build a sustainable production and consumption chain, Mai Son commune encourages the establishment of agricultural and fruit-growing service cooperatives. Currently, the commune has over 40 cooperatives, including many exemplary organic fruit-growing cooperatives such as Tan Thao, Me Lech, Thanh Cuong, Anh Trang, Dai Phat, etc.
Mr. Luong Ngoc Long, Deputy Director of Dai Phat Cooperative, Mai Son commune, Son La province: Dai Phat Cooperative is developing seasonal fruit trees, growing whatever fruit is in season. Members also plant varieties such as longan, mango, custard apple, and passion fruit. Recently, the cooperative has also organized training sessions for members to apply science to production, implementing processes such as VietGAP and organic farming to enhance the value of products.
To date, the total area of fruit tree cultivation in Mai Son commune has reached over 4,600 hectares. To improve production efficiency, the commune actively encourages farmers to shift their crop structure towards commercial production, forming raw material areas linked to the application of high technology; at the same time, it promotes the replication of effective models suitable to the local conditions.
Mr. Nguyen Anh Thu, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Mai Son Commune, Son La Province: The People's Committee of the commune will continue to coordinate with all levels, sectors, and relevant units in strengthening the testing of new varieties in crop and livestock farming, replicating economically efficient models and models that meet VietGAP standards, in order to meet market demands.
Thanks to the sound guidance of the local government and the active participation of the people, the orchards in Mai Son have yielded economic benefits, contributing to solving income problems and opening up a sustainable path for agricultural development in the locality.
