Located at an average altitude of 1,300m above sea level, Pha Det peak in Chieng Hac commune is blessed with a cool climate and abundant clean water, ideal for cultivating the specialty Shan Tuyet tea. Not only is it a valuable product of the mountains and forests, but the tea grown here is also opening up a stable economic development path as the tea brand has been and continues to be established in many markets.
Bản Ôn Ốc currently has 355 ancient Shan Tuyet tea trees, many of which are hundreds of years old. Since 2019, the locals have been determined to preserve the remaining tea trees and proactively plant new ones. They cultivate the tea organically: without spraying pesticides or using chemical fertilizers. As a result, the tea retains its pure aroma and the subtly astringent taste of the mountains and forests.
Recognizing the economic value of the ancient tea trees in On Oc, members of the Tay Bac Cooperative in Yen Chau commune, together with the local government, have encouraged people to preserve and care for the remaining tea trees; and to build a brand for ancient Shan Tuyet tea with the hope of helping people develop their economy.
Mr. Vang Lao Tong, On Oc village, Chieng Hac commune, Son La province: In 2019, the cooperative came to encourage people to take care of and prune tea plants. They provided technical guidance to me and other villagers, creating income opportunities for us.
In June 2025, On Oc Shan Tuyet tea was evaluated and ranked as a 4-star OCOP product by the Provincial Council of the "One Commune One Product" (OCOP) program. This is the result of clean and safe production processes and the preservation of traditional processing methods. Currently, the cooperative is actively promoting trade, especially through e-commerce platforms, to bring On Oc tea closer to consumers inside and outside the province.
Mr. Nguyen Anh Duc, Tay Bac Cooperative, Yen Chau, Son La: Being recognized as an OCOP product is a new step forward for the cooperative, making it easier for the product to reach the market. It is proof of the cooperative's product quality and helps consumers become more aware of the product.
From 2019 to the present, the village has mobilized its residents to preserve and care for the remaining tea plantations and plant more than 1,000 new Shan Tuyet tea trees. The aroma of On Oc tea is not only the pride of the people of On Oc village, but also a testament to the transformation of this ancient tea-growing region – from small-scale production to 4-star OCOP products, the villagers here have affirmed the value of local agricultural products with their own hands and dedication.
